Where can you walk from urban sidewalks directly onto a three-mile walking trail in nature? Only in Sparta! The trail will wind around the perimeters of the frisbee golf course and ball fields within the Sparta Recreation Sports Park on the north end town. A paved .7-mile section is handi-capped accessible.
On Saturday, March 22, 2025 Sparta High School Track and Field and cross-country coaches, Ted Smith and Jessica Buckner, student runners, and parents cleared logs and stumps from wooded areas of the trail. Their work allows Tim Clay, owner of X-pert Trailers, to widen paths with a forester machine. Ethan Metzgar, DPW, ran a brush hog through the complete trail. Trail marking signs are being created by Robinson’s Signs in Cedar Springs. The forester machine use and signs are possible through Sparta Community Works.
The Sparta Sports Park walking trail will be completed in May. Team families from surrounding communities and Sparta’s cross-country teams will also be able to use it. Our entire community will be healthier! Please join the “Trail Team” volunteers to help maintain it. Contact: Rob Steffens, 616-299-6817, or Sue Blackall, 616-460-2429
